Travel Oxygen For COPD Patients

!9# Travel Oxygen For COPD Patients

When people learn that they have COPD, one of the first things they worry about is the impact it will have on their quality of life. In the past, being diagnosed with COPD meant that you had to make drastic changes to your lifestyle. The reason was because this condition required people to spend the majority of their time at home receiving oxygen. If you have been diagnosed with COPD, it's important to know that this is no longer the case. While this condition still requires oxygen, oxygen machines are not still limited to your home. There are now portable devices that can give you the freedom to continue traveling to where you want to go.

Without oxygen, there are several reasons why traveling with COPD is nearly impossible. First, this condition causes you to easily be out of breath. When you're out of breath, you can't walk around to see new sights. Not getting enough oxygen will also make you tired. If you're tired, the last thing you want to do is get up and spend the day going places. As a result of these issues, COPD will cause you to have an overall lack of energy. Luckily, you can counteract these issues with an oxygen concentrator. Not only will a concentrator make you feel better, but a portable one will give you the freedom to travel.

If this is your first time to look at portable oxygen concentrators, there are several models you should consider. The first is the Respironics EverGo. This model boasts a battery life of up to eight hours. You'll be able to use this device all day without worrying about charging it. When you do need to recharge it, you can run the EverGo on AC or DC power. Because it delivers pulse flow oxygen up to a setting of six, you will be able to get as much oxygen as you need while you are away from home.

The next portable machine to consider is the Invacare XPO2. The XPO2 is a quality device that you can use while you are on a plane. Because it has received official FAA approval, you can continue visiting wherever you want. If you're in the mood for a shorter trip, you will also be able to run this machine through one of your car's DC power outlets. Regardless of where you're going, you'll have no problem bringing the Invacare XPO2 with you. The reason is because it only weighs six pounds with its internal battery!

The last concentrator to think about is the Inogen One G2 portable oxygen. With eight hours of battery life, you won't have to worry about this one suddenly dying on you. While it has a long battery life, it doesn't have a heavy weight. The Inogen One G2 only weighs seven pounds. Although it's light, it is still very durable. This compressor in this device is built to last. Additionally, the entire machine is protected by a three year warranty.

Continuous Flow Portable Oxygen Concentrators Or Pulse Flow

!9# Continuous Flow Portable Oxygen Concentrators Or Pulse Flow

Portable oxygen concentrators are not a small investment, making sure you choose the right one for your needs is very important. With so many to choose from how do you know which one is right for you. The most important feature in travel oxygen concentrators, is the flow. Oxygen Units such as the Respironics Evergo and The Invacare XPO2 are pulse flow units. Continuous flow units would include the Sequal Eclipse 3 and the DeVilbiss IGo.

Pulse vs Continuous Flow

Many patients receive there oxygen in pulse flow also known as on demand flow, which means the oxygen does not continuously flow through the hose. Instead, the oxygen pulsates coming out as you take a breathe. The strongest pulse flow portable oxygen concentrator is the Respironics Evergo. The Evergo puts out up to 1050 mils of oxygen compared to the XPO2, which only puts out 750 mils of oxygen at max. Pulse flow travel oxygen machines have settings usually between 1-6. Settings on a pulse flow oxygen machine are different than on a machine that flows continuously. On demand delivery may be a different amount of oxygen on a setting of 3 depending on the unit you are using.

Most patients that needed continuous flow oxygen were not able to travel until the Sequal Eclipse came on to the market. Up until last week, the Sequal Eclipse was the only continuous flow portable oxygen concentrator that has both a continuous and pulse flow setting. Today, there are now 2 other units that have the same settings, the Oxlife Independence and the DeVilbiss Igo. Heavier and bulkier than most of its competitors, the continuous flow units include a light cart for easy transport. Best off all, because of its ability, through the power and the continuous supply of oxygen-mode, the continuous flow oxygen units are good for both travel and home, making the need for massive home oxygen cylinders or concentrators obsolete.

FAA Authorized Portable Oxygen Concentrators

!9# FAA Authorized Portable Oxygen Concentrators

[if ]

One of the major problems for patients who must have supplemental oxygen relates to their mobility and this problem can be even greater when traveling. Their options for mobile oxygen units are oxygen tanks that carry liquid oxygen; oxygen cylinders that hold compressed oxygen gas; and finally portable oxygen concentrators that extract oxygen from surrounding air.

Over the last few years mobility has been a major focus of manufacturers and as a result of their efforts patients today are much more mobile and therefore freer to move around, to participate in many types of activities that were virtually impossible just a few years ago. Today portable oxygen concentrators have become the most popular alternative as they are lighter, they are more maneuverable and since they do not store oxygen as such, but retrieve it from the air that surrounds us they are much more practical.

The US Department of Transport, through the FAA have authorized various models of portable oxygen concentrators to be carried and used on board all airplanes that fly over U.S. airspace. This means that carriers must allow passengers to bring on board any of the authorized portable concentrators. The authorized units now number 11 as in early 2010 four more models were added to this list.

This list is now composed of the following:
Delphi Medical Systems RS-00400 Invacare XPO2 AirSep Lifestyle AirSep Freestyle IInogen One SeQual Eclipse Respironics EverGo DeVilbiss Healthcare's iGo, International Biophysics Corporation's LifeChoice, Inogen's Inogen One G2 Oxlife's Independence Oxygen Concentrator.

FAA regulations state that all U.S. carriers and all airlines that fly over U.S. airspace must permit any passenger that needs supplemental oxygen to bring on board a portable oxygen concentrator that has been approved. These approved oxygen units should have the manufacturers label indicating it is an FAA authorized concentrator.

The use of these units is allowed during all phases of the flight and this means from the moment the passenger boards the plan until he disembarks - in other words during taxing, flight, takeoff and landing.
